What Parents Should Know About Puberty and Sexuality for High-School Students in Life Skills Programs

Puberty and sexuality are normal parts of adolescent development. Students who participate in life skills programs experience the same physical changes, feelings, curiosity, and desire for relationships as their peers, while sometimes needing more direct and individualized teaching to understand these experiences safely.

This research-informed parent guide explains how families and schools can support healthy development while teaching privacy, consent, personal boundaries, relationships, digital safety, hygiene, self-advocacy, and protection from exploitation. It also offers practical guidance for home-school collaboration and individualized instruction.

The goal is not to discourage healthy development or permanently control students. It is to help each young person understand their body, communicate choices, respect other people's boundaries, recognize unsafe situations, and seek help when needed.
